Description
This presentation shares our approach to delivering astronomy education through both traditional and alternative pathways in UK secondary schools. It outlines the success of our GCSE Astronomy programme in London, with a focus on supporting students from low socio-economic backgrounds through targeted outreach and in-school visits to boost retention. We also highlight our transition to HPQ Astronomy, which allows students to explore the subject through a research topic of their choosing and the creation of a hands-on astronomy artefact, providing a non-exam-based equivalent to a GCSE. Finally, we introduce AEON—the Astronomy Education and Outreach Network—a new initiative to connect and support astronomy teachers across the UK through regular professional development events and resource sharing. This session offers a practical look at engaging students and educators with astronomy beyond the core curriculum.
