History of NAM

The National Astronomy Meeting (NAM) has been held every year since 1992, with the exception of 2000 when it clashed with the General Assembly of the IAU at Manchester and in 2020 due to the COVID19 pandemic. Prior to 1992, the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) organised an "out of town" meeting most years, which was hosted at an institution outside of London. See the NAM Wikipedia page for a good of summary of all NAMs held to date, including all "out of town" meetings back to 1948.

The first NAM was held in Durham: the original meeting "flyer", kindly provided by John Lucey (its custodian for the last 33 years!), is shown below.

The first 25 years of NAM was reviewed by Ken Pounds in an excellent A&G article in 2016, which we strongly recommend if you are interested in the history of NAM or the developments and activities that have take place at NAM over the years.

We are proud to be bringing NAM back to Durham for 2025 - please join us at Durham in July 2025 to enjoy NAM 2025!
