Description
The European Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), currently under construction in Chile, will soon be the largest telescope in the world, designed to operate across both visible and infrared wavelengths.
METIS is an imager and spectrometer developed for the ELT, covering wavelengths from 2.7 to approximately 14 microns. Within METIS, the LM-band spectrometer (LMS) provides high-resolution spectroscopy (R ≈ 100,000) over a narrow wavelength range of 2.7 to 5.3 microns.
The IFUs, designed by the UKATC, incorporate two image slicers. These slicers are facet optics that slice the image and reformat it into a pseudoslit, which then feeds into the spectrometer, for full field spectroscopy. Durham University has been involved in the manufacturing of some of the slicers. This presentation discusses the progress of manufacturing and metrology for several facet components, along with the challenges faced and the performance achieved.
