Description
This talk will focus on a case study of an artist-in-residence project centered on astrophysics, astronomy, and art. Hosted by the Department of Astronomy at Tsinghua University and co-founded by art and science curator Iris Long, the project exemplifies interdisciplinary research.
Touch the Universe not only conveys cutting-edge astronomical knowledge but also delves into the everyday labor behind abstract models and data in astronomy. In addition, the project investigates how astronomy—serving as a middle ground—relates to precision instruments, space exploration, and everyday technologies. It seeks to collaboratively explore our shared concerns and collective care when we contemplate the universe.
The talk will explore how the disciplines of astrophysics and the humanities/arts can find common ground in creative, speculative, and philosophical dimensions—promoting interdisciplinary dialogue and opening up new avenues for practitioners in fields such as art, design, and science fiction. It will also examine the modes of production, display, and communication of art-science both within and beyond academic circles.
